Beautiful forests of pine and deciduous trees and extensive meadows with fruit trees and horse paddocks form the idyllic landscape surrounding the Wacker factory, which is part of the UNESCO Geo Nature Park. Impressive sights such as the Felsenmeer, Lichtenberg Castle and Frankenstein Castle are just a few of the many interesting excursion destinations in the region.

How Wacker and Doerr became the Wacker factory

Today’s Wacker site has been the location of a mill since the Middle Ages – the Schachenmühle – first mentioned in a document in 1553. Philipp Wacker (factory owner) and Carl Doerr (merchant) bought the “Obere Schachenmühle” site around nineteen hundred, moved their company from Darmstadt to Nieder-Ramstadt and began production in the former mill buildings in 1901. In 1902, the first Wacker & Doerr building (Westbau) was completed on the new company site – production was expanded.

In 1908, the company expanded, the East Building (where the WACKERLOFT is located), the machine hall, the administration building and the canteen (now a restaurant) were completed. The large shed building followed in 1912, the small shed building in 1926, and the Zeppelin Hall and boiler house in 1931. The building ensemble, as it is still almost intact today, was complete.

From 1908, production building of plastic components for electrical engineering, for the construction of measuring instruments, machine fittings, office machines and later for the world-famous ignition distributors made of the novel plastic Bakelite. The WACKERLOFT, a room that shows its past as a production hall. Injection moulding machines, punches, drills and lathes were located here – filing, milling and hammering were carried out here. The electrical energy was generated next door in the machine hall itself. A gas turbine supplied the electricity (there was no public grid yet) and the waste heat was used to generate steam for the heating system.

 

Today, peace has returned to the building, the site where at times almost 800 Wacker & Doerr employees manufactured precision parts. The grand industrial architecture with thick walls and the high cap ceiling between enormous steel girders has been preserved in its original state and carefully restored. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a coffee bar, we rent and use this beautiful loft for film shoots, photo shoots, seminars and events. And so history has come full circle: Production is taking place again in the former machine hall – less with heavy machinery but with equally weighty ideas and beautiful images.
